Description

Deep within the emerald mountains of East Africa lies a world ruled not by the great herds of the savannah, but by the quiet intelligence of primates. This expedition journeys through mist-covered volcanoes and ancient rainforests where mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, and countless forest species thrive in remarkable biodiversity.
From the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park to the dense jungles of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and the vibrant canopy of Kibale National Park, the journey reveals an entirely different side of Africa — intimate, mysterious, and deeply alive.
Here the wilderness is quieter, the encounters closer, and the experience profoundly human.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival in Kigali

Arrival in the welcoming capital of Kigali.
Set among gentle green hills, Kigali offers a calm and elegant introduction to Rwanda. The evening is relaxed, allowing time to rest after international travel while preparing for the forest journey ahead.

Day 2 - Into the Virunga Mountains

After breakfast the road leads north through Rwanda’s famously green countryside toward Volcanoes National Park.
Terraced farms blanket the hillsides while vibrant villages dot the landscape. In the distance, the volcanic peaks of the Virunga Mountains rise through drifting mist.

Day 3 - Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Today offers one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters in the world. Guided by expert trackers, the trek enters the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park in search of a habituated mountain gorilla family. Spending time with these gentle giants in their natural habitat is an experience both powerful and humbling.

Day 4 - Lake Kivu

The journey continues westward toward the tranquil shores of Lake Kivu. Fishing villages and forested hills line the lake’s calm waters while small wooden boats drift across its surface. The afternoon offers time to relax beside the water or explore the surrounding lakeside communities.

Day 5 - Crossing into Uganda

Today the expedition crosses the border into Uganda, entering the dense forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
This UNESCO-listed rainforest is one of the most biodiverse habitats in Africa, home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population.

Day 6 - Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

A second gorilla trek offers another opportunity to experience these remarkable primates in their natural environment.
The terrain of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is wild and dramatic — steep forest slopes, thick vegetation, and hidden valleys filled with birdsong and movement.

Day 7 - Through the Crater Lake Highlands

The journey continues across Uganda’s scenic highlands toward the primate forests of Kibale National Park.
The road passes through rolling tea plantations, crater lakes, and small rural villages where daily life unfolds slowly among the hills.

Day 8 - Chimpanzee Tracking

Kibale Forest is one of Africa’s most important primate habitats.
Guided by researchers and trackers, the trek enters the rainforest in search of wild chimpanzees moving through the canopy of Kibale National Park. Their calls echo through the forest while monkeys and colourful birds fill the surrounding trees.

Day 9 - Bigodi Wetlands Walk

This morning offers a gentle guided walk through the wetlands bordering the forest.
The Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is rich with birdlife, butterflies, and several monkey species including colobus and red-tailed monkeys. It is a peaceful conclusion to the forest exploration.

Day 10 - Departure

After breakfast, the journey continues toward Entebbe for international departures.
The road passes through Uganda’s fertile countryside before reaching the shores of Lake Victoria, where the expedition comes to its close.
