Climbing Kilimanjaro: Routes to the Sky.
Orok Travels Tanzania offers five unforgettable routes to the summit of Kilimanjaro. Choosing the right route can be the key to a successful and soul-stirring climb. Longer routes allow for better acclimatization, increasing your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters.

Lemosho Route

An 8- or 9-day trek, the Lemosho Route is a favorite for those seeking a rich and immersive experience. Beginning in the rainforest village of Lemosho on the mountain’s western side, the trail leads through the serene Shira Plateau, past Kibo’s snowy slopes, and finally to the summit. With dramatic scenery and excellent acclimatization opportunities, this route is ideal for those wishing to savor every step.

Machame Route

Often called the "Whiskey Route," the Machame Route offers a thrilling and varied 7-day adventure. It’s a dramatic climb, weaving through lush forests, moorlands, and rocky ridges. It’s one of the most popular routes for good reason—it gives climbers a bit of everything: beauty, challenge, and a high success rate.

Northern Circuit

For those who seek solitude and untouched wilderness, the Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro’s best-kept secret. This 9-day route winds around the northern slopes, offering spectacular panoramic views and a peaceful trekking experience. It’s the longest trail, and also the one with the highest summit success rate.

Rongai Route

Starting near the Kenyan border, the Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north. It’s a quieter path, ideal for those who value solitude and steady ascents. This 6-day route passes by the dramatic Mawenzi Peak and offers a great chance to spot wildlife such as monkeys and exotic birds.

Shira Route

The Shira Route begins high on the mountain’s western flank. After a jeep ride through the rainforest to Shira Barrier, your trek begins at 3,300 meters—crossing the expansive Shira Plateau before joining the southern circuit. The 8-day version is best, providing time to adapt and enjoy the mountain’s quieter trails.

Wildlife Wonders

Though not teeming with big game like the Serengeti, Kilimanjaro National Park has its quiet surprises:
Troops of black-and-white colobus monkeys leap through the trees.
Blue monkeys chatter from the canopy.
Curious white-necked ravens follow climbers along the trail.
And if you’re lucky, you might spot a bushbuck in the mist
A frozen leopard discovered in 1926 became the stuff of legend—immortalized by Hemingway. Today, the mountain remains a place of mystery and quiet wonder
